Healthful Classroom Snacks

  • Apples with caramel dip
  • Grapes (they're fun frozen)

  • Carrot or celery sticks with peanut butter

  • Air-popped popcorn (or light/fat-free microwave popcorn)

Beverages that are 100% fruit juice mixed with club soda, vegetable juice, sugar-free lemonade, kool-aid, low-fat (1 % or skim) milk (chocolate milk is okay too) are great alternatives to soda

The USDA is using MY PYRAMID as the new symbol for the food guide pyramid. When visiting their website, you can also get individualized recommendations on food groups and calorie levels.

Color Your Plate

You can make eating fun for your child! By using the colors of the rainbow, your child will get a variety of fruits and vegetables.

RED- tomatoes, watermelon, strawberries, apples

ORANGE- carrots, mangoes, oranges, sweet potatoes

YELLOW- pineapple, squash, corn, bananas

GREEN- lettuce, green beans, broccoli, cucumbers, grapes

BLUE- blueberries

PURPLE- grapes, plums, eggplant

Remember experts advise us of 5-9 servings of fruits and vegetables everyday, especially for school aged children.

Food Allergies

Food allergies are increasing in the school-age population. The most common food allergies are: peanuts, tree nuts, eggs, milk, shell fish, soy, and wheat.

Allergic reactions can range from a mild stomach ache to a rash to breathing difficulties, and could result in death. For the protection of all of our students, the staff discourages students from trading food items at lunch/snack time.

Be A PAL: Protect A Life

Children who have food allergies and being in school, means educating classmates, staff, and parents all school year. Below are 5 easy steps to follow to ensure a healthy environment for all :

  • Food allergies area serious. Don’t make jokes about them.
  • Don’t share food with friends who have food allergies.
  • Wash your hands after eating.
  • Ask what your friends are allergic to and help them avoid it
  • If a friend who has food allergies becomes ill, get help immediately.
