Mrs. Gillespie's 2nd Grade

Welcome to Mrs. Gillespie's 2nd Grade Class!!

September is here and 2nd grade is off to a great start! Our class is using Seesaw for our data notebooks. Seesaw is a digital portfolio where school work will be uploaded for you to see. It is a free app on your phone it is much easier to keep track of than an actual data binder. Every student has a data folder here in class that has a signature page, spelling test graph, and Fundations test graph in it. Please do not take these papers out. Listed on the signature page is every date the folders will come home. For example, the first one was on September 1st. I will send a reminder email too. Make sure over the weekend to look at your student's work in Seesaw and then sign the signature page inside the data folder for the respective date. The signatures are to keep track of when you look at Seesaw. Return the folder with your child to school the following Monday! If you have any questions about how to get connected to Seesaw, just let me know!

I have had some questions about what Fundations is. This is the phonics program that APS uses. We work on Fundations everyday in class for 30-45 minutes. There are very specific ways the students learn how to mark words. Most Fundations units are 2 weeks long, so there is most always a test every 2 weeks. The first Fundations test did not have many high scores. A student needs to score AT LEAST 80% OR BETTER in order to be considered proficient. In 2nd grade, there is a category for Fundations on report cards. On Fundations tests, it is all or nothing. If a student misses one piece the entire problem is wrong. We are working on focusing while taking tests, so these grades should come up over the next couple of weeks.

The Macaw Newsletter is entirely digital this year! For those of you who are new to Petroglyph, this is our school-wide newsletter. I will be uploading this to my website on the left hand side under "News."

I am also posting our weekly schedule so you can see what we are up to in 2nd grade! As always, if you have any questions do not hesitate to email me at victoria.gillespie@aps.edu or call the school at (505)898-0923 and leave me a message!

Fuzzies System

Fuzzies are used to promote positive classroom behavior. Students can earn stickers towards their individual sticker charts throughout the month for displaying good classroom behavior. Stickers can be earned for turning assignments in on time and completed, staying on task throughout the day, and much more! When the sticker chart gets filled up, the student earns lunch bunch with Mrs. Gillespie on Fridays!

Table groups work together to earn Fuzzies! Fuzzies are earned if the ENTIRE table group is on task. Periodically, we will have class trivia games where table groups can earn even more Fuzzies. At the end of the week, the group with the most Fuzzies wins a prize!

The whole class can earn marbles towards the marble jar. This can be done only if the ENTIRE class is on task, gets a good report from a Specials teacher, and so on. When the marble jar is full, the class votes on a prize everyone can enjoy!

Let's get to earning!!
